The fan switch is in the radiator, so it does not get hot enough to kick on when the thermostat is stuck shut. Given the age, I would suggest checking the coolant circulation after a new thermostat is installed.Look up the parts microfiche to get a good idea if you have the entire carb apart. Pay extra close attention to the air relief valve as it controls the idle and partial throttle conditions. Put a new battery in it!
