The sliding door stopped working and the slide door light came on. Putting it in manual mode, I found that the door has a lot of extra drag, probably beyond the threshold of the pinch sensor's sensitivity.

You are putting the flip-flop partway out the door, but not far enough for it to hit the sensor. This will also happen on the back edge of the door, when it closes flush with the van.
